what is Resilience ?

Resilience is a necessary attribute in today’s world. So what is resilience?

Resilience is the capacity to deal with challenges that come your way. It’s the capacity to withstand uncertainty and to make effective choices and quality decisions when faced with challenging circumstances you might be faced with.

Given that definition, consider how you make decisions in uncertain circumstances.  You may be experiencing genuinely challenging circumstances, yet other people with different thoughts and emotions may have thrived in those circumstances.

How you ask? by choosing the ’emotional state’ that they want to be in- instead of just dealing with the emotions that arise – and by choosing what they focus their thoughts and emotions on in those circumstances. To be able to remain slightly detached, even in the face of risk and uncertainty.

Consider what emotions something like “risk” can cause you to experience – panic, worry, or could it be excitement?

This will all depend on if you comfortable with risk. And how much risk is too much for you? Can you even imagine experiencing risk and it causing you to make an even better decision?

Every situation has a flipside, and the resilient thinker has truly learnt this. If risk is scary for you, ask yourself – what are you choosing to focus when things are really bad? Could a change of focus change how you are experiencing all of this??  Then bring on resilience.

Peeople who demonstrate emotional resilience remain calmer, clearer and more focused on their outcome during times of stress and upheaval. So could a change of focus or some emotional resources assist you in your life now? Probably.

Hypnosis can help you reduce stress, think more clearly and even achieve more success with less effort.

How to reduce stress for IVF success

IVF Treatment | Aspire HypnotherapyNatural stress reduction for couples undergoing IVF treatment

For many couples, undergoing IVF can be a stressful and emotional time. Maintaining a clear calm state of mind will help improve your health, outlook and your chances of a successful pregnancy.

The relationship between stress and infertility is complex, however the benefits of relaxation are now becoming more widely accepted. A 2011 study showed that women who participate in a mind-body program for stress reduction while undergoing IVF treatments had a significantly higher pregnancy rate than those who do not (52% versus 20%)[1].

Other studies have found the use of hypnosis can increase the success of implantation as the couple’s attitude to treatment was more favourable[2].

When it comes to men, stress can of course affect semen quality and quantity. A 2010 study [4]  found “stressful life events may be associated with decreased semen quality in fertile men”.

The connection between stress and decreased fertility is thought to be directly related to our biological evolution; as the mind-body knows that in situations of extreme tension and when times are tough, it is not the ideal time or circumstance to make a baby.

Stress reduction with Hypnotherapy

So how do you reduce your stress levels?

You have probably heard that meditation and relaxation can help you de-stress and unwind. What is less well known is that hypnotherapy and hypnosis also helps you achieve those same benefits. Regularly being in a relaxed state creates physiological changes that reduce stress, a major benefit while undertaking fertility treatments to ensure you keep your body open and receptive to a possible pregnancy.

When we enter a hypnotic state the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, giving rise to the relaxation response. The physiological changes that reduce stress include a lowering of blood pressure, a decrease in heart rate and reduced production of stress hormones.

Hypnotherapy and relaxation also stimulate the pineal gland, which in turn stimulates the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland predominantly regulates female reproductive hormones such as FSH, oestrogen, progesterone, and oxytocin in labour.

Undergoing hypnosis in conjunction with fertility treatments can help you feel more relaxed, which will assist you in feeling more calm and positive about your chances of a successful pregnancy.

You have probably heard that meditation and relaxation can help you de-stress and unwind. What is less well known is that hypnotherapy and hypnosis also helps you to reduce anxiety and psoriasis conditions, and even free chronic suffers with longer term treatment.

Regularly being in a relaxed state creates physiological changes that reduce stress,  include a lowering of blood pressure, a decrease in heart rate and reduced production of stress hormones (cortisol).

Common conditions caused by high levels of stress include:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Psoriasis
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Drug and alcohol addiction
  • Amenorrhea

Research on the benefits of hypnosis to reduce anxiety

A 2012 study on stress and psoriasis[1] found “a significant decrease was noted in anxiety and stress” and that  “relaxation therapy combined with hypnosis significantly increased subjects levels of self-esteem”.

Additionally subjects reported that on follow-up, their treatment gains were maintained.

Research on stress and psoriasis

Most clinicians and researchers agree that stress affects the course, frequency and nature of psoriasis.

A Psoriasis Research Institute study[2] reported that “adjuncts to traditional medical treatment (eg biofeedback training, psychotherapy and hypnosis) that can reduce stress levels and have been shown to have a positive effect on the course of psoriasis. Consideration should therefore be given to advocating adjunctive therapies aimed at reducing psycho-physiological stress (eg. hypnosis)”.

Research shows effectiveness of hypnosis

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can be very effective and beneficial for treating a variety of disorders.effectiveness of hypnosis

The effectiveness of hypnosis is often questioned because the cause of hypnotic phenomenon is not yet known. Research has been conducted on hypnosis for hundreds of years. Thousands of studies have been performed, yet the origination of hypnosis has not yet been realized. The Mayo Clinic has found hypnosis to be very effective and beneficial with a variety of disorders. Hypnosis does not always work the same way for everyone, but its effectiveness cannot be denied.

The Mayo Clinic defines hypnosis as being an altered state of consciousness. There are many changes that occur while a person is in a trance-like state. A person is able to focus their attention in a more direct way while under hypnosis. People are also more open to suggestion, which often helps people make changes in their thought process and in their actions. While in a hypnotic state, people tend to be less critical and more believing. The Mayo Clinic believes that the purpose of hypnosis is a therapeutic technique to help you understand and gain more control over your behavior, actions, emotions, or physical well-being.

Researchers and doctors at the Mayo Clinic are not sure how exactly hypnosis works, but current research points to a mind-body connection through nerves, hormones, and chemicals in the brain and body. Hypnosis is best used in conjunction with other forms of therapy.

The Mayo Clinic lists the following benefits of hypnosis: changing negative habits (stop-smoking), reduce stress and anxiety, control pain, relieve irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), lower blood pressure, reduce frequency and intensity of migraines, treat asthma, and heal skin disorders.

The Mayo Clinic also puts many hypnosis myths to rest. Many people think that under hypnosis, they will have no free will. This is untrue; under hypnosis people have a heightened state of concentration, but they are in complete control. Another myth is that a hypnotherapist can control people under hypnosis. The truth is that a hypnotherapist serves as a guide and cannot make anyone do something that they do not want to do. It is also not true that people can become hypnotized without consent. Hypnosis involves a person`s willingness to participate (Goal Oriented Hypnotherapy).

The Mayo Clinic is a one of the leaders in research in the medical field. Their research of hypnotherapy is evidence-based (Hypnosis). They are a reputable source of information on the topic of hypnotherapy and medicine.
